Phnom Penh, April 3, 2024 - Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated the Royal Government of Cambodia's (RGC) unwavering dedication to bolstering the education sector to cultivate a skilled human capital base for the nation's advancement.
Addressing attendees at the annual meeting of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports held at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia this afternoon, the Prime Minister underscored the government's steadfast focus on education, considering it a cornerstone of national development.
In the current legislative session of the National Assembly, the RGC has prioritized human capital development as articulated in the Pentagonal Strategy - Phase 1, with a key emphasis on enhancing the quality of education, sports, science, and technology.
"I firmly support the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in nurturing a robust human capital pool. Education is the bedrock that ensures the development of our human resources. Even as Prime Minister, I recognize the need to continuously learn and adapt to emerging challenges," stated Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Hun Manet further encouraged all stakeholders to reinforce school governance, review and refine school curricula, and enrich extra-curricular activities to instill knowledge, discipline, ethics, and exemplary behavior among students.
According to Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Cambodia currently boasts a total of 19,000 general education schools and kindergartens, comprising 8,891 kindergartens, 8,252 primary schools, 1,341 secondary schools, and 897 high schools.
Additionally, Minister Hang Chuon Naron highlighted the presence of 169 higher education institutions nationwide, comprising 78 public institutions and 91 private institutions.
During the last academic year, Cambodia registered a student population of over 4.09 million, encompassing 400,000 young children, 2.20 million primary school students, 711,000 lower secondary school students, 431,000 high school students, 3,500 general and technical students, and 284,600 higher education students.
The government's commitment to enhancing education underscores its dedication to nurturing a skilled workforce equipped to drive Cambodia's socio-economic progress in the years ahead.
